Providing Knowledge and Skills to Build a Better Future
The Academy of Building Industries (AOBI) is a public charter high school geared towards the vocational trades. High school students, grades 9-12, work towards their high school diploma by following the academic graduation requirements, while focusing on a trade to complete their elective credits. In the end they receive their high school diploma, as well as the possibility of a certificate in the trade they've specialized in. AOBI gives tri-state area students a school choice. It allows parents to be involved in the future success of their student, and their student be in control of their future.

About AOBI
Vision Statement
A positive, student centered, alternative Charter High School with a foundation built upon strong student-teacher relationships, which will foster a rigorous and relevant educational culture.
Mission Statement
Our mission at the Academy of Building Industries is to provide the opportunity for a high school education focused on the academic and technical skills necessary for graduates to excel in a lifetime career in the construction industry.
Jean took her role as principal shortly after the school opened in the 2004-05 school year. Holding a Masters in Educational Leadership and a Bachelors of Science in Education with Emphasis in Art from Northern Arizona University, she is always looking for new and creative ways to keep others encouraged and inspired. Her first administrative actions included making changes to the school that would break the mould and create an environment that was unlike more traditional high schools. With a smaller student population, Jean was able to execute her goal to establish a family-like atmosphere that students feel comfortable learning in, feel more than just a number in, and feel like they belong in.
Jean's views remain her focus through today and the AoBI family continues to grow. Word of mouth from current students to that of potential students and their friends is one of the most valuable tools used for recruitment. Her continuous dedication to supporting a strong team of staff helps ensure the students utilization of that tool in the community. Students will talk with their friends, their parents, and others about a school they enjoy attending.
Rainee joined the staff at the Academy when it opened for its first year in 2004-05. Holding a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology, she actively executes the offices of Student Services (Registrar/Enrollment, Guidance/Counseling, Records, and Attendance). Rainee takes a no-nonsense approach which allows her to be more dynamic in finding fast and efficient resolutions to student issues. Leaving no room for cookie-cutter procedures, many students find her easy to get along with, talk to, and go to with their concerns.
Coy joined the team at the Academy in 2005 as the instructor of the welding and metals classes. Today, Coy not only oversees the welding and automotive courses, but he is also the Vocational Director managing the entire vocational department.
Coy's background experience in welding and machine technology has lead him to rewarding highlights throughout his career, including owning and operating his own engine and automotive business for over 20 years.
Jeri has served the Academy of Building Industries since its launch in 2004, starting as an Instructional Aide and eventually becoming the Business Manager. Since college, Jeri's primary focus has been centered in business leading her to many opportunities throughout her career ranging in positions from receptionist to service representative and management.
At the Academy, Jeri fulfills a wealth of duties from purchasing to Human Resources in addition to instructing two elective Business Math classes. These classes teach students the basics in business mathematics, inventory, and cash register operation.
With over 25 years of teaching experience, Pat holds a Bachelors of Science in Special Education from Ball State University. Pat joined the staff at the Academy in 2007 and is currently the Special Education teacher, 504 coordinator, Title 1 testing coordinator, and AIMS/Terra Nova testing coordinator.
She teaches a variety of subjects to special education students throughout the day. Special Education students can also be sent to her room by request of the classroom teacher or the students themselves to receive extra help on work they are unable to complete in the regular classroom.

Our Students in Action
Academy of Building Industries wins Educational Program of the Year for the Earth Saints Academy, a program that allows students to spend time in the forest doing public service projects and learning from rangers.
Principal, Jean Thomas says she hopes recognition of the Earth Saints Academy makes it easier to secure supplies for students and perhaps a replacement for the schools well-worn 15- passenger van.
Congratulations Academy of Building Industries and Go Earth Saints!

The Earth Saints Academy explores careers and education available through the NAU Forestry Degree programs, the National Park Service, and the US Forestry Service.
The Academy of Building Industries High School recognizes deficits in the public education environment that hinder some students from reaching their full learning potential. As staff members learned about outdoor classrooms and green technology emerging in charter schools across the nation, they went to work to learn more. To inspire, motivate, and teach the love of leaning, students need to be exposed to environments, opportunities, and experiences that spark curiosity. Outdoor classrooms do just that, so ABOI staff along with students created the Earth Saints Academy.
The Earth Saints Academy is an extracurricular activity designed to expose at risk students (due to poverty or environmental issues) to experiences they would normally never have the opportunity to participate in. The Earth Saints Academy explores careers and education available through the NAU Forestry Degree programs, the National Park Service, and the US Forestry Service.
Through field investigations and interdisciplinary activities, students learn about the natural and cultural resources of the community and country. Partnering with National Park Service Rangers and US Forestry Service, AOBI staff teaches standards in Biology, Ecology, Geology, Astronomy, History, English, and Art. Week long camping trips where students perform community service, allow kids to learn soft skills, social responsibility, ethics and team work. Students return with a new found interest in learning, a sense of personal accomplishments, community pride and responsibility.
