The River Valley Artists Guild hosted the 21st annual Black Mountain Art Show earlier this month at Mohave Community College and received more than 150 entries in a variety of categories.
Pieces included acrylic, oils, watercolor, mixed medium, photography, pastels, ceramics, jewelry, digital fine art, assemblage, construction, drawing, fiber, textiles, glass work and sculpture.
“We had a great turnout from students this year, too,” said Elena Smith, RVAG member.
Ribbons were given for first, second, third place and honorable mentions.
Best in Show and People’s Choice winners received cash prizes, $300 and $200 respectively. The Best in Show (Teen) winner received art supplies.
Karen Lopez took home Best in Show for her mixed media sculpture “Undone.”
The piece was composed of multiple layers, beginning with a shiny purple-blue snake skin unzipping itself to reveal a more complicated inside.
“There’s always something reflective about my work,” Lopez said.
She also took the second place ribbon in the media category for a different sculpture.
Teen Best in Show went to the Academy of Building Industries’ metal shop class project “Under The Sea,” which depicted sea life on a metal canvas.
The students were given an easel, painting set and canvases as their award.
The People’s Choice went to a water color painting, “Joshua Tree” by Star Handsall.
